25 februari job huntting in londonRemember something about my job huntting story in london with my rubbish english.
The job hunting process is quite different to that in mainland. As i know, there are usually two ways to find a job in london, via agency or applying the job from employers' career websites. The graduate programme designed for the fresh men from universities is isolated from agency, usually via career website. To the people without working experience, graduate programme is the best choice, especailly when the unemployment rate is up since it is a bad idea for you to PK with the experienced via agency.
Before i went to london, i had already started my work application. Thanks to the staff in career office and my friend Tarek who help perfecting my CV and covering letter. After that, i attached them on a famouse website, efinancialcareers, and applied dozens of positions daily. It is an easy job, you just need to read the latest jobs' requirements then press the 'applying' button; your files will be sent to the corresponding agency. If the agency think you are a good candidate, he or she would like to send you some positions information to you and ask whether you are interested with the job. If right, the hunter company would test or interveiw you first. Only pass the interview in the agency, coud you be arranged to the further interview with the employer. Because they want to make sure that the candidates they introduce would satisfy the employers. As i remember, i had stupidly rejected one invitation from an agency; i replied to him, said 'sorry, i won't go back to IT if i could find a finance work'. Later, i found that i couldn't get a finance job indeed......
Applying graduate programme costs you much time. Generally, it includes such process, online application, online test, first round interview, second round(may no) , Accessment Center.
Every one dislike the long and damn application form which asks you personal information and some competency questions, like 'why do you choose Goldman Sach', ' Why do you choose the position? ', ' what is your advantage compared with other employees?' and so on. These questions are indeed annoying, but you have to finish them. Luckily, most of the questions from different companies are similiar, so you could save the answers and copy them to other companies' application form; BTW, make sure you have written the right name for the company and the position. At first few days, i had to spend a whole day on one form; later, i could finish one in an hour.
If hr likes your application form, she would allow you to do next step, online test, which usually combined by numerical test and verbal test, sometimes with something like character test. Before you start the test, you'd better practice them first. When you find you could finish the test in stated time, you could go. To verbal test, i always asked help from my friend.
There are much work to prepare for an interview. You should know what kind of questions the interviewers would ask, technical or competency questions. Fortunately, for graduate programme, most of the questions are the later. If you have experienced several such interview, you will find that most of questions are overlapped. Like 'why do you choose this company or the postion?' 'your motivation to this company or this job' 'how do you compare our company with other one?' 'Give me an example that shows your leadership' 'an example that you work under great pressure' ' are you flexible' 'Example that you can adapt to a wide variety of people, situations and environments' 'teamwork ability'. So you'd better prepare a short speech for each questions, about 2mins. BTW, some business quesions also should be prepared, like 'what is your opinion to current market', 'what is the recent exchange rate of derling pound to US dollar'. Finally, the hr may ask whether you have questions for her. If you are unsatisfied with your answers during the interview, now it is a very good chance for you to change the result. My friend Jennifer told me that during the interview, it is good if the interviewer could speak much not you, so you should do your best to make the interviewer speak as much as possible. There are several questions you may ask, like 'The position responsibilities: what task should to be accomplished and what the time for it', 'Resources available to accomplish the job responsibilities', 'Performance measurement: how you will be measured and evaluated', 'What’s the career path after three years?'...... I think the hr would like you ask such questions, cos they show that you are fairly interested with the positions.
AC varies from different companies. It may include interviews, case study, group discussion, presentation, even test; Before you go there, you must ask the hr more details; also you could search it on line, if lucky enough you may find some nice man with the offer would put his ac experience on website. Except face to face interview, i have nothing to say about all the activies in AC because of my terrible performance there. Shame! I just spoke three or four sentences in the group discussion of Sungard AC, haha......
Be patient. To get an offer, there is a long way to go. When failed, never give up, what should do is to find out your problem and upgrade youself.
Share with your friend. I got lots of information from friends, like the job source in various universities career websites and some application form samples. Further My roommates helped me practice interview. Without them, i could never reach the final success.
Just to memorize one of the projects i have come through, even i may give up the gain.
Almost finish, not check yet...................
